How much has been repaired, how much more will be repaired?
The municipality reports that with less than a week left until the start of the new school year, street and other transport infrastructure renewal works continue in Vilnius. Many of them will be completed in September, and the renewed infrastructure will contribute to more convenient and smoother transportation in the city. Considering passenger flows, more public transport vehicles will also be deployed on the capital’s streets.
Currently, about 20 km of street repair works have been completed in Vilnius. Among the completed projects are Subačiaus, Žaliųjų Ežerų, Kirtimų, M. K. Paco streets, the Abiejų Tautų Respublikos highway, and part of Laisvės Avenue.
It is estimated that work is ongoing on about 14 km of street sections. Contractor equipment can still be seen on Švitrigailos, P. Lukšio, A. Goštauto streets, the Kalvarijų street section from Ozo street to K. Ulvydo street, S. Konarskio, Jogailos, Džiaugsmo, and other streets.
By September 1, the carriageway installation works are planned to be completed on Geležinio Vilko, Kalvarijų, P. Lukšio, Kareivių, Šilo, Bieliūnų, S. Batoro, A. Goštauto, L. Sapiegos, Lentvario streets, as well as on Laisvės Avenue.
The works in the capital include street reconstruction, major repairs, surface drainage network and other transport infrastructure renewal, so the completion of some larger projects will still have to wait. Works are still ongoing on Trakų, J. Basanavičiaus, B. Radvilaitės, Maironio, V. Kudirkos, Jogailos, Vilniaus, Džiaugsmo, and other streets.
Currently, 8 main contractors are carrying out street repair works in Vilnius.
Traffic system improvement, strengthening public transport
It is estimated that traffic intensity increases by about 9–20% at the beginning of autumn each year. To manage the increased traffic flows, the traffic system in Vilnius is being updated and improved: traffic lights are being renewed, new traffic sensors and smart systems are being installed.

While transport infrastructure renewal works are ongoing, drivers are asked to plan trips during peak hours by choosing alternative routes and, if possible, avoid these streets and their sections: Švitrigailos, Žirmūnų, Ozo and Ukmergės, Gariūnų, Džiaugsmo, Trakų and Vokiečių, T. Narbuto, V. Kudirkos and Rinktinės streets.

How many trolleybuses will run on the streets?
Considering public transport passenger flows and the forecasted autumn travel needs, from September 1, 633 buses and trolleybuses will also roll out onto the capital’s streets, with increased frequency on some routes.
“The beginning of autumn in Vilnius traditionally means higher traffic flows: schoolchildren, students, and residents return to the city after holidays, so traffic intensity increases sharply. More patience than usual is also needed due to ongoing street and other transport infrastructure renewal works.
Trying to ensure as smooth travel as possible at the start of the new school year, we plan to complete some street renewal works before autumn. The largest contractor forces are planned so that works on the main streets of the capital finish as soon as possible,” says Vilnius city mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
