Decided to vacation in autumn? An expert advises where to look for the cheapest flights

According to Marijonas Baltušis, head of smart devices at Telia, Lithuanian travelers most often use platforms such as Skyscanner, Google Flights, Momondo, Kayak, or Kiwi.com. Although they all help find cheaper flights, their operating principles differ slightly. For example, Google Flights is valued for its extremely fast search and clear price calendar, which makes it easy to see on which days a flight costs the least.

Meanwhile, Skyscanner is popular among more flexible travelers because it allows searching for flights to any country or city based on a given budget, Momondo and Kayak often stand out with more detailed filtering tools, and Kiwi.com can offer non-standard routes by combining flights from different airlines into one trip.

However, the lowest price shown does not always mean the best choice. Some platforms act only as search engines and redirect to the airline’s website, while others sell tickets themselves or redirect to third-party intermediaries. Marijonas Baltušis says that travelers often focus on a difference of a few euros but do not evaluate other important factors.

“Flight search platforms are a great way to quickly compare offers from different airlines, but it is worth paying attention to whether the ticket is sold directly by the airline or through an intermediary. Sometimes buying from a reseller saves a few euros, but when faced with flight changes, cancellations, or refund procedures, we may experience more inconvenience than buying directly from the airline,” says M. Baltušis.

The expert also recommends being flexible when planning travel dates. Even a difference of one or two days can result in a ticket price tens of euros lower. Most popular apps allow you to see the cheapest prices for the entire month, so it’s useful to start your search with a broader period and only later choose specific dates. Also, it’s not always worth limiting yourself to Vilnius Airport. For some destinations, more attractive offers can be found by flying from Kaunas, Riga, or Warsaw.

“Travel apps are useful not only before purchasing a ticket. They provide real-time information about gate changes, flight delays or cancellations, allow you to store boarding passes on your phone, and quickly find all travel information in one place. For this reason, before departing, it is worth taking care not only of tickets but also of a working connection abroad. Without a connection, you can simply miss important information about your flight,” says M. Baltušis.

He reminds that when traveling in the countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area, mobile communication services can in most cases be used under similar conditions as in Lithuania. However, when traveling outside the EU, it is recommended to check the operator’s offered roaming plans, data packages, and tariffs in advance so that you are not surprised by significantly increased bills upon return. It is also worth making sure that the international roaming function is activated on your phone at all.

“In border areas, the phone sometimes automatically connects to the network of another country’s operator, which may be subject to higher tariffs. Therefore, we recommend monitoring which network the device is connected to, and if necessary, selecting the operator manually. Special caution should be exercised by those traveling on cruise ships, where communication is often provided via satellite networks, so service prices can be significantly higher,” notes M. Baltušis.

He reminds that before traveling, it is also useful to save important contacts in international format on your phone, download offline maps, and ensure that important documents are accessible even without an internet connection.
