The pontifical sandal and silk stocking were part of the bishop’s solemn liturgical attire. The shoe is richly decorated with gold-colored metal threads embroidered with plant ornaments, sequins, and beads. Bishops wore such sandals during solemn Masses together with liturgical stockings.
However, this exhibition tells not only about an exceptional exhibit. It invites you to look at Motiejus Valančius not only as a historical figure but also as a person. At an object that was very close to him – accompanying him in everyday life, ceremonies, and service.

After more than two centuries since the beginning of Motiejus Valančius’s life journey in Nasrėnai, the small velvet shoe has returned to where its owner’s story began.
“Sometimes a very small object can tell a great story,” say the staff of the Bishop Motiejus Valančius Homeland Museum in the Kretinga district.
