Kongo DR and M23 fighters agreed on a peace talks plan

Their joint statement was announced on Sunday by Switzerland, which hosted the negotiations.

Conflicts have been ongoing for decades in the eastern part of the DR Congo, with several armed groups, including M23, which took control of part of the region last year, fighting over the mineral-rich territory.

At the end of last year, both countries signed a US-mediated peace agreement in Doha, Qatar, but fighting continued.

At a new round of talks held in Switzerland last week, both countries and their mediators stated that they had outlined a way forward.

“The parties have prepared guidelines setting out consistent steps and deadlines for negotiations under the Doha Framework Agreement, and committed to maintaining flexibility and creativity within the current structure of this agreement,” the statement said.

“They reaffirmed their commitment to continue negotiations aimed at comprehensive peace and conflict resolution by implementing the Framework Agreement,” it added.

Representatives from the US, Qatar, Switzerland, the African Union Commission, and Togo, acting as the African Union mediator, also participated in the closed-door talks held from August 17–21.

Both countries indicated that they “agreed on the importance of a standardized method for reporting suspected ceasefire violations.”

The statement said that the first ceasefire monitoring mission in the Minembwe area of South Kivu province in the DR Congo is expected to take place on Monday.

The parties also agreed to establish “a mechanism tasked with reviewing progress and addressing issues related to the implementation of commitments under the Doha Framework Agreement,” it said.
