Facial skin sends danger signals: when is it time to change the cleanser?

Pharmacist Jurgita Jankauskienė from the pharmacy chain “Camelia” explains in a press release what active ingredients to look for in facial cleansers for different skin types and what mistakes to avoid in daily routines.

First, you need to know your skin

According to the pharmacist, although some cleansers are suitable for various skin types, the most important thing when choosing a product is to assess individual skin needs. Skin can be normal, dry, oily, combination, or sensitive, and its condition often changes depending on the season, hormonal changes, age, or the cosmetics used.

“An improperly chosen cleanser can further highlight existing skin problems. For example, using strongly cleansing cleansers with acids or other intensive exfoliating substances on dry or sensitive skin can increase the feeling of tightness, redness, or flaking. Meanwhile, very oily, oil-based cleansers are not always the best choice for very oily or acne-prone skin if they leave a heavy feeling or the skin is not sufficiently cleansed,” explains J. Jankauskienė.

She says that people often think that if the skin looks completely clean and even a bit tight after washing, the product is working well. However, in reality, the feeling of tightness often indicates that the product used was too strong, and moreover, the natural protective barrier of the skin may be damaged and too many natural lipids removed. Over time, this can make the skin more sensitive, drier, or even start producing more oil.

Different compositions for different skin types

According to the pharmacist, when choosing a cleanser, the most important thing is to pay attention not to the packaging or scent, but to the composition. For dry and sensitive skin, gentle creamy or oil-based cleansers, milks containing moisturizing and skin barrier-supporting ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or panthenol are usually more suitable. Such products help reduce moisture loss and protect the skin from additional dryness during cleansing.

“For oily or acne-prone skin, gel cleansers with active ingredients that help control oil secretion and reduce pore clogging are more often recommended. These products are often supplemented with salicylic acid, niacinamide, or zinc. However, one should avoid choosing products that overly degrease the skin or washing the face too often – damaging the natural skin barrier can cause the skin to produce even more oil, thus worsening the problem,” warns the pharmacist.

She adds that for combination skin, gentle gel cleansers with moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid are usually suitable, and if needed – with a low concentration of niacinamide, which helps maintain the balance of oilier facial zones without burdening drier areas.

Everything depends on overall skin care

According to J. Jankauskienė, for the chosen cleanser to properly do its job and be effective in removing dirt, excess oils, cosmetics, etc., certain mistakes should be avoided.

“One of the most common mistakes is washing the face with hot water. It can remove the protective layer of skin lipids, causing the skin to dry out faster and become more sensitive, vulnerable, and irritated. Also, the face should not be scrubbed with rough sponges, towels, or frequently use mechanical scrubs with granules. Such products can irritate the skin, cause small damages, and flaking. For daily care, it is enough to gently spread the cleanser with fingertips and rinse with lukewarm water,” advises the pharmacist.

She adds that many people are recommended to wash their face twice a day – morning and evening. Washing too often, especially using intensive cleansing products, can disrupt the natural skin barrier and promote sensitivity.

“It is equally important to regularly change the towels used for facial care. It is recommended to have a separate towel for the face, preferably cotton or microfiber, which is not used for hands or body. It should be washed at a high temperature and changed more often, especially if the skin is acne-prone or sensitive, as bacteria, skin oils, and cosmetic residues can accumulate on damp fabric,” recommends J. Jankauskienė.

The pharmacist points out that if, despite proper care, the skin is constantly red, heavily flaky, itchy, troubled by rashes, or other long-lasting symptoms, one should consult a dermatologist. Sometimes skin problems may be related not to improperly chosen cosmetics but to certain skin diseases that require different treatment.
