Adventures of a fisherman from Kaunas in Lake Vištytis: he sailed into Russian territory, was detained, fined, and returned to Lithuanian border guards, reports the State Border Guard Service.

On Wednesday evening, while fishing in the border waters of Lake Vištytis, a 61-year-old man from Kaunas accidentally crossed the Lithuanian state border and entered Russian territory in an inflatable motorboat. According to border guards, while fishing, the boat’s engine got stuck in the weeds. The man lost control of the boat, causing the lake waves to carry it to the Russian side. There, the fisherman from Lithuania was detained by Russian border guards, who after questioning fined him for illegal crossing of the state border.
On Thursday afternoon, officers of the VSAT Pagėgiai Border Unit’s Vištytis Border Post organized a meeting with Russian border guards. The fisherman and the boat were returned to Lithuania.

Pagėgiai border guards note that fishermen often choose fishing spots near the Lithuanian and Russian state border in Lake Vištytis. Although fishing along the state border is popular, it also carries many risks. Therefore, it is especially important to assess natural conditions, the technical condition of the vessel, and the risk of possible malfunctions. While fishing, it is necessary to remain attentive, constantly monitor your location, and not violate the state border.
Lake Vištytis is very old, unique, very clean, large (about 1,860 ha), and rich in fish. According to the Lithuania-Russia border agreement effective from August 12, 2003, Lithuania owns only about one-fifth (about 21%, 386 ha) of its area.
