Parliament approved the new Defense Minister of Ukraine

Ukrainian lawmakers on Wednesday approved the country’s new defense minister, Yevheniy Chmara.

This happened a month after a reshuffle that sparked public dissatisfaction when his popular predecessor Mykhailo Fedorov was dismissed.

The decision was made a day after M. Fedorov urged moving towards elections, which were postponed due to the Russian invasion, in a video statement.

Last month, after suspending M. Fedorov and later appointing a new chief of the armed forces amid a public dispute between the military and the Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Y. Chmara, a widely respected career intelligence officer, to lead the ministry.

“Ukraine needs more strength. And it will have it,” Zelensky said on social media, welcoming the parliament’s decision to approve Y. Chmara.
