“This year we are carrying out one of the largest highway renovation programs in history. Today we already see real progress: on most sections, work is already underway at full speed, and on some stretches, the main work has already been completed.

We understand that temporary traffic restrictions cause inconvenience, but the work currently being carried out will significantly improve the condition of the country’s most important transport arteries and ensure safer and more comfortable journeys in the future,” says Martynas Gedaminskas, CEO of “Via Lietuva”.

Repair works are intensively continuing

The largest repair works are taking place on the A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda highway. Currently, contractors are working on sections longer than 83 kilometers. The works include not only road surface renewal but also the repair of bridges and viaducts. The main asphalt works near Klaipėda and Kaunas have already been completed.

At the end of August, it is planned to start repairing another 16-kilometer section of the highway between Gargždai and Klaipėda.

This year, a total of 58 kilometers of road and 11 bridges and viaducts are planned to be repaired on the A1 highway. The repair of the remaining 41-kilometer sections and 8 bridges and viaducts will continue in 2027.

Intensive work is also underway on the A2 Vilnius–Panevėžys highway – the repair of the section near Širvintos is progressing rapidly, with most of the surface renewal works already completed here.

“Via Lietuva” is also continuing the renovation of other main roads this year – since early June, renovation works have started on three sections of the Panevėžys–Aristava–Sitkūnai (A8) main road, with a total length of just over 3 km. They are planned to be completed by November this year. In July, work also began on the section of this road from 32.75 to 46.82 km, with completion planned by the end of the year.

Simple repair works are also being carried out on the A11 Šiauliai–Palanga main road (136.905–141.941 km). The project, implemented in two stages, will renew the road section between Kretinga and Vydmantai and repair the intersection near Kretingsodis. The works are planned to be completed by November this year.

In addition, simple repair works are being carried out on a nearly 7.3 km long road section in the Telšiai district. The works here are planned to be completed by summer 2027.

“Via Lietuva” reminds that temporary traffic organization changes are applied in the sections where works are underway, so drivers are urged to plan their trips in advance, adhere to the established speed limits, and carefully follow road signs. This is necessary to ensure the safety of both road users and workers on the roads.

Performing simple repair works

Simple repair works are being carried out on Lithuanian highways. They are performed in cases where the road structure foundations are still considered to have sufficient bearing capacity, but the upper surface is worn out. During simple repairs, all road surface defects – cracks, ruts, deformations – are removed, either by replacing the entire thickness of the surface or partially replacing asphalt layers. Such works significantly extend the road’s service life and ensure safer and more comfortable traffic conditions.

To use funds rationally, the asphalt surface in the most heavily loaded and most damaged first traffic lane is replaced in full thickness, while in other lanes with fewer defects, where heavy vehicle traffic is much lower, only the top asphalt layer is renewed.
