Abandoned quartz sand quarry in Anykščiai will become a park and commercial zone

As BNS said, Daiva Gasiūnienė, head of the Architecture and Urban Planning Department of Anykščiai District Municipality, a contractor competition has already been announced for part of the territory to set up a park with infrastructure for more than 2 million euros.

After a few months, it is planned to sign a contract. The work would be completed by the end of 2029.

According to D. Gasiūnienė, the reclamation of the former quarry is one of those aimed at revitalizing unused urban areas, and this plot has been abandoned for a long time, although next to it is the Anykščiai swimming pool, the former quarry is right at the entrance to the central part of Anykščiai.

“The area was excavated during Soviet times, regimes changed, the company disappeared (“Anykščių kvarcas” was liquidated) that would have reclaimed the excavated site, maybe planted it with forest. Therefore, this territory still gapes horrifically: ditches, gravel, almost a dump. No one hauls anything away yet, no landfill is made there, but it very much looks like it could have happened,” she said.

According to the municipality representative, it is important to reclaim the former quarry because next to it is the Anykščiai Regional Park, a protected area. Therefore, the municipality prepared a project for the reclamation of the territory divided into two parts. Half of the territory will be formed into a space and a park with greenery and a water body will be established.

“One place was very excavated, so water collects there, and a water body will be created by enlarging it,” said D. Gasiūnienė.

In another place, it is planned to establish a small free economic zone: a social infrastructure area is being created with zones for service, recreation, entertainment, health, sports, tourism business, and small non-polluting industry.

“That half of the plot will be temporarily protected, untouched, because we think that when the infrastructure in the other territory, where the park will be, is arranged, then we will take on the other part – visually the future investor needs to understand that these are not just promises, but steps are already being taken. Then an attractive point appears for broad-spectrum investment to come,” she said.

However, if it happens that a large investor wants to come to Anykščiai, they may also be offered to settle in this place.

“We are talking about that soft commerce that people will like. Both sports, recreation, and resort activities, where quite a few jobs are created, because 7.5 ha is quite a large area, especially in the city,” said the municipality representative.

“Or maybe the municipality will decide that it needs to develop, for example, sports infrastructure there. Maybe we will do it ourselves. An open field. Maybe the municipality itself will develop it, or lease or sell (the plot – BNS) at auction,” said the municipality representative.

The municipality will allocate 491 thousand euros for the park’s establishment, the remaining funds will come from European Union funds.
