“The Baltic Way reminds us how much we can achieve by being united. It is important to preserve this story not only in memories but also in city spaces that testify to our path to freedom. The renovated area near the Šeškinė chapel pillar will become an even more comfortable place for the community to gather and remind the younger generation of the Baltic Way’s history,” says Vilnius city mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

The historical place is marked by a chapel pillar

On August 23, 1989, one of the Baltic Way sections in Vilnius stretched through Šeškinė. This historic event is commemorated today by the chapel pillar standing near Ukmergė Street, dedicated to the unity and freedom aspirations of the Baltic peoples.

Every year, people gather there to remember the Baltic Way – a living chain about 600 kilometers long that connected Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Commemoration – music and community activities

During the August 23 commemoration, songs by the Šeškinė community ensemble will be played, and attendees will be invited to kite workshops and bracelet making – activities symbolically reminding of freedom, community, and the bonds that unite people.

Vilnius residents and city guests are invited on August 23 at 12 p.m. to meet by the chapel pillar dedicated to the Baltic Way near the Šeškinė polyclinic and together remember the feeling of unity.
