The death penalty has not been carried out in Lebanon since 2004.
Justice Minister Adel Nassar called the abolition of the death penalty a historic event and stated that the threat of the death penalty previously hindered Beirut from agreeing on the extradition of suspects from countries where this penalty is prohibited.
Human rights organization Human Rights Watch’s Lebanon researcher Ramzi Kaiss told the news agency AFP that this parliamentary decision is “a huge step forward in the country’s human rights field, representing a clear rejection of a cruel and arbitrary punishment that should never be imposed.”

The decision to abolish the death penalty was made as the parliament considered a series of bills during the current legislative session, including a general amnesty law that has been debated for many years.
