During his long coaching career, D. Nelson led the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks teams, and he himself played for the Los Angeles Lakers (1963-1965) and Boston Celtics (1965-1976), with whom he became a champion 5 times.

The specialist ended his coaching career in 2010 when he retired from the Warriors.
D. Nelson was named NBA Coach of the Year three times and was inducted into the NBA Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
It was under D. Nelson’s leadership that Šarūnas Marčiulionis, who moved to the NBA, made his debut with the Warriors, ultimately proving that he could play in the strongest league in the world.

News of D. Nelson’s death was announced by his family.
“On Sunday morning, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, surrounded by family, peacefully passed away to God. During the last week, family and friends surrounded him with love and care, sharing precious memories,” the statement said.
The Nelson family is closely connected to Lithuania. Don Nelson’s son Donnie contributed the most to Š. Marčiulionis’s move to the NBA and also worked for many years on the coaching staff of the Lithuanian men’s national team.
