News of D. Nelson’s death was announced by his family.

“On Sunday morning, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, surrounded by family, peacefully passed away to God. During the last week, family and friends surrounded him with love and care, sharing precious memories,” the statement said.

The Nelson family is closely connected to Lithuania. Don Nelson’s son Donnie contributed the most to Š. Marčiulionis’s move to the NBA and also worked for many years on the coaching staff of the Lithuanian men’s national team.
