Famous actress Genovaitė Vaiginytė has died

Genovaitė Vaiginytė (1935–2026)

The community of the State Šiauliai Drama Theatre with deep sorrow announces that today, August 6, the life of the long-time theatre actress Genovaitė Vaiginytė has ended. The actress was 91 years old.

For almost a quarter of a century – from 1966 to 1991 – her creative path was inseparable from the Šiauliai Drama Theatre. Here her most vivid roles matured, the most mature years of creativity passed, and she left a deep mark in the history of the theatre and in the memory of the audience.

In the memory of colleagues and theatre people, Genovaitė Vaiginytė remained an actress of special stage culture. Musical, with strong vocal training, she subtly created psychological roles, distinguished by very precise stage speech and elegant posture. Directors often entrusted her with roles of intelligent, dramatic women, in which her sensitivity, inner discipline, and ability to create psychologically convincing characters were revealed.

During her creative path at the Šiauliai Drama Theatre, she created over ninety roles. Among the most memorable are roles in the performances “Like the Blooming Cherry” (1974, dir. A. Ragauskaitė), “Seaside Resort” (1975, dir. A. Ragauskaitė), “Donja Rosita” (1976, dir. G. Padegimas), “Resurrection” (1977, dir. A. Ragauskaitė), “The Sweet Burden of Fidelity” (1982, dir. A. Lininis), “The House of Bernarda Alba” (1982, dir. U. Brikmanis) and other performances.

She also participated in poetry performances and created a one-woman show based on the works of Federico García Lorca.

In 1988, the actress’s work was recognized with the Potencija Pinkauskaitė award.

Theatre is not only performances. It is people whose presence creates the spirit of the theatre. Genovaitė was one of them. She was a modest, respectful, and sensitive colleague, who testified to loyalty to the profession and the stage through her work. She will remain so in our memory.

We sincerely sympathize with the relatives, friends, and all who had the fortune to know her, work together, or see her on stage.
Her roles will remain in the history of Lithuanian theatre, and her bright memory – in the hearts of the State Šiauliai Drama Theatre community.
