Thursday marks the 81st anniversary since the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Japan in 1945.
An annual peace ceremony was held in Hiroshima, and people across Japan take time on this day to pause and honor the victims.
A moment of silence in Hiroshima began at 8:15 a.m. local time – the exact minute when U.S. forces dropped the bomb in 1945.

The heat and radiation caused by the explosion destroyed the city, and by the end of the year, it is estimated that 140,000 people died. Many survivors suffer from cancer and other radiation-related illnesses.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and a record number – 121 country and regional representatives.
Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui laid an updated list of victims at the memorial dedicated to the victims. It includes 353,639 names, including 4,393 people who died or whose deaths were confirmed in the past 12 months.
On August 9, the United States dropped a plutonium atomic bomb called “Fat Man” on the Japanese port city of Nagasaki.
