A sculpture created about 100 years before Christ, called “Seated Woman with a Companion on a Funerary Relief,” depicts a high-status woman sitting on a luxurious throne. She rests one hand on the chair and reaches with the other for a rectangular object held by a young servant.
It is this mysterious object that sparked a wave of conspiracy theories. Some internet users claim that the woman is holding not a jewelry box, but a modern computer, writes the “Daily Mail.”
“Does this ancient Greek statue depict a laptop and prove time travel?” one user asked on social media.
Even more – some say that the object shows two slots resembling modern device USB ports.
The museum has a different explanation
Skeptics and historians view such claims cautiously. According to them, the mysterious object in the statue is not a technological device – it is most likely a jewelry box.
Representatives of the J. Paul Getty Museum, which protects the statue, have explained that such boxes are often depicted in ancient Greek funerary art.
“Although the box looks too shallow to hold many items, it can be recognized by comparison with other funerary reliefs where women pull ribbons or jewelry from similar boxes,” the museum representatives stated.
Not the first time ancient “technology” is sought
This is not the first case where people see modern devices in ancient artworks.

In some Greek pottery paintings created about 500 years before Christ, people noticed figures holding flat rectangular objects and writing on them as if with an electronic pen.
However, historians explain that these were most likely wax tablets – writing tools used by ancient Greeks, somewhat resembling modern tablets in shape.
Similar theories arose about other historical images. A 1977 photo from Elvis Presley’s last concert was widely discussed online, where some people claimed to see an audience member with an “iPhone.”
A 1943 photo taken in Iceland was also analyzed, showing a man who appears to be talking on a mobile phone.
Are time travels possible at all?
Scientists do not rule out that certain forms of time travel could theoretically exist. Einstein’s general theory of relativity shows that time is not absolutely constant – it can slow down depending on speed or gravity.
However, so far there is no reliable evidence that people can travel to the past or that a working time machine exists.
So the 2000-year-old statue is most likely not a trace of future technology. Still, it once again showed how easily historical objects can be interpreted from a modern human perspective.
