Terrible tragedy was avoided thanks to prompt response: a deliberately opened gas cylinder was found in the apartment building

On Monday afternoon, emergency services rushed to the village of Lančiūnava in the Kėdainiai district, where a worrying report was received about smoke coming from an apartment. Upon arrival, officers found a man inside along with an open gas cylinder and a fire source.

Turned on the gas and threatens with a knife, locked himself in

On August 3, at about 3:45 PM, it was reported that smoke was coming from an apartment on the first floor of a block of flats in Liepų Alley, Lančiūnava village, Vilainiai eldership.

Concerned neighbors called the emergency number four times, stating that a person inside had turned on the gas, was threatening with a knife, and had locked himself in.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon entering the apartment, officers found a 41-year-old man. Preliminary data suggests he may have intended to commit suicide.

Firefighters acted decisively

At that time, firefighters found an open gas cylinder and a fire source about 0.5 square meters in size in the kitchen.

Rescuers immediately turned off the gas cylinder and took it outside, and extinguished the small fire with available means. Afterwards, the premises were ventilated, and not only the affected apartment but also neighboring living spaces were inspected.

The prompt work of the emergency services helped avoid much more severe consequences not only for the apartment resident but also for the surrounding residents of the block of flats.
