According to several US media outlets, OpenAI initially expected this milestone to be reached earlier this year, after hitting 900 million active users per week at the end of February, but faced increasing competition from rivals.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 but only released its first consumer product, ChatGPT, in November 2022. By comparison, Facebook took six years from the launch of its social network to reach one billion users.

The figure presented by OpenAI on Friday includes all its AI interfaces, primarily ChatGPT, but also Codex – a model designed for AI-assisted programming – and ChatGPT Work – a platform that allows users to access other external applications.

The business client segment, generating higher revenue and margin per user, became the company’s priority at the end of last year. Since then, it has slightly reduced the gap with its main competitor Anthropic, which focuses specifically on this client group.

At the beginning of July, OpenAI released three versions of its new model GPT-5.6, including a “cheap” version called Luna, which costs five times less than the most powerful model Sol. However, the market is developing so rapidly that on Thursday the company went even further – it reduced Luna’s price by 80%, thus including it among the cheapest advanced models, including those developed in China.
