Erika Umbrasaitė came face to face with death: "I could have ended up in the morgue"

On the social network “Facebook,” E. Umbrasaitė openly spoke about what happened. According to the well-known writer, she was walking the dogs outside when she suddenly fell down the stairs.

“My dear readers,

I would like to thank you for your patience and apologize for the long silence. And to confess where I have been missing and silent for so long.

Sometimes we promise to change our lives starting Monday, and then Mr. Monday, after consulting with Monsieur Fate, suddenly changes life in an instant – or rather, shakes it so much that you realize how much you love that beast called life and how fragile it hangs on a silk thread woven by God.

That is exactly what happened to me on the morning of the last Monday in June. I decided to walk the dogs and… I flew headfirst down the stairs. Fortunately, the Viking was still home for a few seconds as if by a miracle and literally, in the most banal sense of the word, saved my life.

Loss of consciousness, blood flowing freely from the head like in that old good black Australian series and not stopping, the ambulance arrives, although I still say – don’t call, it’s not necessary, just bandage it and it will be okay :)). Then the hospital, stitches near the temple, sutures on the back of the head, rainbow-colored bruises all over the body, scars, scans, etc…

The final chord – a week of bed rest during the busiest time at the gallery, unfortunately.

But, thanks to my guardian angels and the inner stuntwoman in me, everything ended much better than it could have, as the doctor who stitched me said.

I didn’t die, although I easily could have, I wasn’t bedridden forever, although that was a possibility, I didn’t break anything, hallelujah. I probably really am a cat woman, always falling more or less successfully and having nine lives.

The doctor said: “Vous revenez de loin” (you are coming back from far away), you could now be not in my chair but in the morgue.

After the fall, not only my whole body hurt but also my soul – the flashbacks of the moments of the fall persistently and frighteningly haunted me, and the cherry on the cake of life’s troubles was my face.

It looked as if I had fought in the ring with Rocky Balboa, at the same time stung by bees and overdosed on botulinum injections. Truthfully, appearance was the least of my problems and even a source of funny laughter.

Even now, almost three weeks after the fateful fall that almost ended in the morgue, one eye is a bit smaller, never mind, whatever. What annoys me the most is that I still can’t raise my right eyebrow – really like after some botulinum overdose, I am half surprised, reacting with only one eyebrow.

To shorten this whole apology story, the essence is – I am still trying to recover from the psychological shock and physical trauma I experienced. That is why I chose to be silent and disappear from the online public eye for a while, as I had not a single extra vital or moral strength for it.

And now I am forced to save the last remnants of my remaining energy for work at the gallery – I work seven days a week, nine to ten hours (the joys of a small seasonal business). I also devote some vital energy to fighting the hellish heat tormenting France and me – sometimes rising even to plus forty, feels like hell – all forty-five to fifty-eight degrees.

Truthfully, what I have the least patience and strength for, but unfortunately am forced to do, is to deal with vampires. At least once a week, there are such characters who talk non-stop and seem never to leave the boutique.

And now, as I write this text, one such “vampire” has been standing over my soul for an hour, almost annoying me with advice on how to run a business and live in general, and seems to want to pour out her whole life story. I am already thinking that those few minutes of silence without consciousness after the stunt fall down the stairs would now be much more pleasant for me than her endless tirade like a stuck Uzi machine gun.

Anyway, I finally gathered myself to write to you the reason for my silence, to apologize and to thank you.

And I also realized that I love my life very much, even though it is very imperfect, and that I needed this fall.

You won’t believe it, but after it, life shone in completely different colors and changed radically – friends joke: “You are so radiant, we will need to come to you for magical stairs therapy and roll down them if that’s the effect.”

I felt similarly twenty years ago when I heard the breast cancer diagnosis in my youth. I will tell you about this whole adventure and the life changes that followed later, when energy and strength return.

Thank you for staying with me in the Patreon space, even when I was silent for reasons unknown to you. I promise to treat you to abundant texts very soon!

While lying in bed (which I dislike the most because I am a true, incurable FOMO – fear of missing out – tormented character), I had time to think a lot about future topics and create stories.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t write – the vision was blurry, and as if there weren’t enough bad adventures and trials, the computer had breathed its last, and the beautiful doctor had forbidden me to use it… )

So, merci and au revoir, until very soon virtual meetings!” – wrote E. Umbrasaitė.
