The property transfer was carried out in accordance with the Law on the Management, Use, and Disposal of State and Municipal Property. In February of this year, the Property Bank recognized the object as no longer necessary for the performance of state functions, and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania decided to transfer it to the ownership of the Tauragė District Municipality to implement independent municipal functions.
“We protect heritage not to keep it locked away, but to make it a living part of our region. The Lauksargiai railway station has enormous historical and cultural value, so we are pleased with the constructive cooperation with the Property Bank, thanks to which this object was transferred to the municipality. This is an important step towards preserving one of the most unique historical buildings in the Tauragė region and giving it a new purpose – to open it to the community, tourists, and future generations,” says Dovydas Kaminskas, Mayor of Tauragė District Municipality.
According to the mayor, the active initiative of the Lauksargiai community and their desire to preserve this historic building is especially pleasing. This shows that local people care about the history of their region and see the potential of this place to become a vibrant center for the community and visitors.
“This decision is an excellent example of how cooperation between the state and local government can find solutions that best respond to the public interest. The goal of the Property Bank is to ensure that state property is used as efficiently as possible. When an object is no longer needed for state functions but can create great value for the local community, transferring it to the municipality is a rational decision,” says Algirdas Stumbrys, Director of the Strategy and Development Department of the Property Bank.

The transferred complex consists of a 527 sq. m railway station building, a nearly 139 sq. m warehouse, and a cargo platform. Before the transfer, this state real estate was managed by the Property Bank under trust rights.
The municipality will use the object to implement independent functions – preserving cultural heritage, creating conditions for cultural and educational activities, promoting tourism, and contributing to the region’s economic development. The restored historic station should become a new attraction for both local residents and guests of the Tauragė district in the future.
