“If we talk about young people, I really have to note that the situation is not good or, in other words, we are living in a new reality,” I. Balnanosienė said on Wednesday to LRT radio.
According to her, this is despite the fact that youth unemployment has significantly decreased in recent years.
“It is even 1% lower than the national average, reaching 6.7%. The average duration of unemployment among young people has decreased, the sustainability of employment, that is, re-registration after employment relationships, is also decreasing percentage-wise. But still, the fact that we have 15 thousand young people who either are not in a hurry to look for work or are not in a hurry to gain education because they do not have it, is a new reality of the country,” said the head of the Employment Service.
“Young people in this reality today want things quickly, easily, they highly value flexibility, companies’ additional motivational measures, leisure rooms, and everything else. Young people no longer want to do hard physical work; the vast majority of them want to work in the service sector, that is, in offices, even despite not having education,” I. Balnanosienė said.

According to the head of the Employment Service, young people are not in a hurry to get employed because they have the opportunity to live longer with their parents, look for studies or jobs they like.
“The country is strengthening, so it is natural that young people are not in a hurry because they can live longer with their parents, they can look longer for studies they like, for jobs they like later. Let’s forget those times when it was natural that you finished school, then entered university or vocational school, after that a master’s degree, and then you work. Those times are gone, and we all need to come to terms with this new reality,” said the director of the service.
“Somewhere, sometime, a very big mistake was made in our state. Both in families, in our education system, and in the public and private sectors, we all have to take responsibility if education and professional career are no longer values,” she added.
