According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Genevieve’s maximum sustained wind speed reached 72 m per second.
Genevieve’s center was approximately 855 km southwest of Manzanillo and was moving northwest at 20 km/h.
No coastal watches or warnings were issued, but the hurricane center said that storm-generated waves, capable of causing “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,” were affecting parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast and Baja California.

The storm is expected to begin weakening on Tuesday.
Further northwest in the Pacific, Hurricane Fausto weakened to a Category 1 storm, continuing to move towards the Hawaiian Islands.
Forecasters said Fausto should weaken to a tropical storm in the coming days, but warned it could still generate large waves in parts of Hawaii.
Fausto’s maximum sustained wind speed reached 36 m per second. The hurricane was approximately 1,080 km east of Hilo, Hawaii, and was moving west-northwest at 22 km/h.
