Due to this step, PiS was left with a majority of just one seat in parliament, which means it could soon lose its position to Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s centrist ‘Civic Coalition’, the largest opposition force.

PiS, which governed the country from 2015 to 2023, played an important role in securing the victory of nationalist Karol Nawrocki in the presidential elections.
However, it seems that it will not be able to win the 2027 parliamentary elections unless it forms a coalition with far-right parties.
Facing its lowest ratings in over a decade, the party has been torn by internal disagreements for months over whether to move further to the right and negotiate an alliance with more radical parties.
In an attempt to quell internal disagreements, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, who himself belongs to the party’s more right-wing faction, issued an ultimatum to his fellow party members to sign a declaration of loyalty by Thursday evening.

However, MPs who do not support the shift further to the right, led by former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, rejected this demand.
“About 30 (…) of our party’s MPs have withdrawn,” Kaczyński told reporters on Friday.
Meanwhile, Morawiecki stated that the actual number of rebellious MPs is 40.

These MPs claimed that they did not withdraw from the party, but were expelled.
