Poland is ravaged by heavy rains: ponds overflowed, damage – millions

It has been raining heavily in this region for several days now.

According to the local fire and rescue service, water overflowed from two ponds. One is located on the territory of a military unit, and the other is in the city itself.

According to tvn24.pl, this is not the first time in Poland in recent days that water bodies have overflowed precisely due to heavy rainfall.

Braniewo Mayor Tomasz Sielicki says that rainwater in the city and its surroundings flows into specially constructed ditches, and from there into ponds.

“We have a situation where more water flowed into those ponds than flowed out. So two ponds overflowed,” the mayor said about the incident.

As reported, most damage was recorded when the pond in the city center overflowed. According to firefighters, they not only had to ensure coastal protection but also stabilize the situation in areas affected by water.

A section of the local road, a sidewalk, a bicycle path, and the recently renovated pond area were damaged. According to the mayor of Braniewo, a new square was built next to the city pond, with work completed just a few months ago and costing five million zlotys (about 1.16 million euros).

According to the mayor, it is still difficult to accurately assess the damage, but it is already clear that it will be significant. The mayor says that the damage to the streets is not alarming, but both pedestrian and bicycle paths have been destroyed. The same applies to the newly built square next to the pond.

“It even breaks your heart to look at it,” T. Sielicki admits.

Firefighters reassure that the situation is stabilizing – after clearing the drainage channels, water is flowing out more abundantly. It is believed that clogged drains were precisely the cause of the problems.
