According to Bordeaux city officials, more than 400 people have already been evacuated by boat from the Cap Ferret peninsula.
The peninsula is on France’s Atlantic coast, west of Bordeaux.
The fire, raging near one of France’s wine regions, has already devastated an area about one and a half times the size of Manhattan and is just one of several fires raging across the country at the height of the summer holiday season.
Water dropped from planes
French authorities have ordered thousands of tourists on the southwestern Atlantic coast to leave campsites and holiday homes. Firefighters, supported by water-dropping planes, are rushing to contain the flames.

France has activated the European Union’s civil protection mechanism and requested assistance, said President Emmanuel Macron, warning that the crisis remains “very intense”.
According to satellite data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the total area of land burned in EU countries this year is the second largest in history.
