Advisor to the Head of the Ukrainian President’s Administration Mychaila Podoliak told the portal “Centrum Europy”, a sister organization of “TVP World”, that Ukraine has noticed increased logistical activity in Belarus, which suggests that a new “northern front” may be opened.
M. Podoliak said that such a move would be unwise, as Ukraine has already fortified this territory and would not need to redeploy troops from the front line.
Moreover, he said that Belarus is “fully within weapons reach.” “There are vital points there that would be destroyed immediately,” said M. Podoliak.
“There have already been attempts [in Belarus] to set up [Russian] drone control points flying over Western Ukraine. And we will destroy them. President Zelensky spoke about this directly,” he added.
Macron warned Lukashenko
It is reported that last weekend French President Emmanuel Macron, during a rare phone call, warned the authoritarian Belarusian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko not to involve Minsk in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
This call came as Ukraine warned that Moscow, supported by Belarus, might be preparing a new push into Northern Ukraine, reports “TVP World”.
If Belarus decided to get involved in the war, according to M. Podoliak, Ukraine would prepare to launch a rapid defensive counterattack.
Minsk joined the exercises
Minsk also recently joined Russia’s nuclear weapons exercises, which further increased concerns about military activity near the eastern NATO flank. However, M. Podoliak said these exercises are merely a intimidation tactic.
“They think they should be feared. But after four years of war in Ukraine, what is there to fear?” he said.
Belarus has been one of Moscow’s closest allies since 2022, when a large-scale invasion of Ukraine was carried out. Belarus then allowed Russian forces to use its territory for the offensive, but Belarusian soldiers did not directly engage in the war.
