“The troubling nature of China’s provocations against legitimate Philippine maritime operations harms regional peace and stability and directly contradicts China’s repeated commitments to resolve disputes peacefully,” added T. Pigott.

This statement was released as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Manila on Tuesday to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers’ talks.

Before departing, M. Rubio said he was open to the possibility of meeting with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on the sidelines of this meeting.
