Hungarian OTP Bank buys Luminor

“OTP Bank” promises to contribute to the further growth of “Luminor”, based on the existing strengths of the bank, market position, and strong relationships with clients.

The press release states that after this deal, the total assets of the “OTP Group” will increase by about 13%, and the share of eurozone operations in the group’s net loan portfolio will grow from the current 42% to 50 percent.

The acquisition of “Luminor” is a strategic expansion into a developed, stable region with significant growth potential. As one of the leading banking groups in Central and Eastern Europe, the “OTP Group” has proven its ability to create value in new markets over the past decades,” said Peter Csanyi, CEO of “OTP Bank”, in the press release.

“We invest capital, liquidity, and technological expertise in the acquired banks and apply a long-term ownership approach. Based on the strong market position of “Luminor”, we will seek to further strengthen the bank’s role in the Baltic countries and contribute to the development of the region’s financial system, lending activities, and financial innovations,” he added.

Meanwhile, “Luminor” CEO Wojciech Sass says that this deal is an important step in the bank’s development.

“Both “Luminor” and “OTP” share a clear commitment to clients, a desire to create long-term value, and to finance the economies of our home markets. Becoming part of “OTP”, “Luminor” will have the backing of an experienced international banking group operating steadily in Central and Eastern Europe,” he said.

It is announced that the deal will be completed upon receiving the necessary approvals from authorities and supervisory institutions and fulfilling other deal closing conditions.

“OTP Group” is a leading banking group in Central and Eastern Europe, serving 17.5 million clients in 11 countries. It reports having successfully completed 25 bank acquisitions since 2001.

The group’s total assets exceed 130 billion euros, and in 2025 the return on equity was more than 21 percent. “OTP Bank” has been listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange since 1995 and has a diversified shareholder structure without state ownership.
