The epicenter of the underground shock was at a depth of 24 km.

“The earthquake destroyed our homes. There are many collapsed adobe houses here,” an unnamed resident of Chongos Bajo told the “N” television channel.

Since the epicenter was at a shallow depth, and many houses in that area are built from adobe or a mixture of wood, reeds, and mud, some towns suffered significant damage, said General Luis Vasquez, director of the National Civil Defense Institute.

“48 houses were destroyed, and 300 people were left homeless,” said L. Vasquez.

Peru is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire – an area of intense seismic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the entire Pacific basin.

According to seismologists, at least 400 earthquakes occur in Peru annually, three-quarters of which are so weak that people do not feel them.
