As reported by the city municipality on Friday, the new signs with the official name of the World Heritage site – “UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism 1919–1939” – will indicate that recognition has been given to unique areas with a total area of 455.3 hectares.

They are currently installed at the main entrances to the heritage zones on Savanorių and Karaliaus Mindaugo avenues, Radvilėnų road, Vydūnas alley, Laisvės alley, and other locations.
According to the municipality, it is expected that the new signage “will encourage residents to take even greater care of their environment and cultural heritage, strengthen community initiatives, and promote the exploration of modernist Kaunas.”
It is believed that in the future, other types of territorial signage solutions are being considered for implementation.
“The new signs remind us that we have much to be proud of, and it is not only the modernist buildings that enrich us, but the entire interwar urban fabric of Kaunas – streets, squares, greenery, panoramas, and traditions that are still alive,” said Saulius Rimas, head of the City Development and Heritage Protection Department of the municipality.

The architecture of Kaunas modernism was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in September 2023 during the UNESCO World Heritage Committee session held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Kaunas modernism developed in the 1930s when the city was the temporary capital of Lithuania after Vilnius region was occupied by Poland. The city has several dozen outstanding examples of modernist architecture.
The UNESCO World Heritage list includes cultural and natural heritage sites and locations of outstanding universal value.
