The “Moonshot AI” model “Kimi K3” is one of several Chinese models whose popularity is growing worldwide due to lower costs and source code that programmers can customize to their needs.

Soon after its launch, “Kimi K3” took first place in the AI coding leaderboard managed by the platform “Arena,” created by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. This sparked interest among specialists in the sector, with some recalling the release of China’s “DeepSeek” in 2025, which raised doubts about US dominance in the AI field.
“Kimi K3 looks really good, so far the closest to the limit,” said University of Pennsylvania professor and AI expert Ethan Mollick.
However, he “cannot write a good detective story about a murder (although no other model can either). This remains the most complex area of AI development,” he added.
“I feel the market will react strongly to ‘Kimi K3’,… similar to the appearance of ‘DeepSeek’,” said technology reviewer and investor Kevin Xu.
Beijing-based Moonshot AI claims that “Kimi K3” is the world’s first open-source model of this size.

“Kimi K3 demonstrated leading-level performance in all our evaluation areas, consistently outperforming other tested models,” said Moonshot AI.
However, overall performance “still lags behind the most powerful proprietary models” from Anthropic and OpenAI, the company said.
Hussein Abbass, a computer science professor at UNSW University in Canberra, said that “Kimi K3” seems to do well in programming, “but it is still unknown how competitive it is across the full range of tasks expected from base models.”
Should US competitors be worried? “I wouldn’t say they need to worry. But they shouldn’t just sit idly,” to maintain their advantage, said H. Abbass.
He added that AI performance “depends not only on the model” but also on the hardware running it, as well as data centers and supply chains.
