It is claimed that Latvia uses other systems for its air defense needs, and the decision to transfer the radars was made considering the US offer.

Minister of National Defense Robertas Kaunas thanked Latvia and the US for continuous cooperation in strengthening regional security.
“The main task of the SENTINEL radars is to enable NASAMS air target destruction operations by providing accurate target detection and tracking information. These radars will help respond more effectively to potential threats and protect the safety of our people,” he was quoted as saying.
NASAMS is one of the most widely used medium-range air defense systems in NATO countries, meeting the requirements set for Lithuania’s defense capabilities.

The first NASAMS system reached Lithuania in 2020, and in 2022 it was fully integrated into the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
The second stage of NASAMS acquisition began in 2023; in May, the ministry announced that the assembly of this battery should be completed by the end of 2026.
