According to the publication, Kyiv is not only stopping Russia’s offensive on the front but is also increasingly moving combat operations into Russian territory, and this is happening amid decreasing support from the United States.
As one of the factors of the new phase of the war, FT points to the Ukrainian military technology company “Fire Point,” which produces about 300 long- and medium-range FP-1 and FP-2 drones daily. Each costs about 50,000 euros.
According to the company’s founder Denys Shtilerman, the drones are constantly used to attack Russian targets, especially in occupied Crimea. One of the new tactics has become “ambushes” against Russian aircraft. For this purpose, the Ukrainian military uses the FP-1 as a “mother” drone, which delivers two other drones with explosives into the target area. Waiting near the airfield, they attack Russian aircraft.
Drones helped Ukraine change the course of the war
The article notes that a few months ago Ukraine’s situation was much worse: Russia had the initiative on the front, and due to massive strikes on the energy sector, Kyiv was on the brink of a humanitarian disaster.
However, now, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “the dynamics have changed in Ukraine’s favor.”
“This month the dynamics have changed in our favor, in Ukraine’s favor. We hold more positions and cause more damage,” he recently said, adding that Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian territory are especially important.

Ukraine less dependent on the West
Head of Ukraine’s mission to NATO Olena Hetmanchuk said the country “is now in one of the strongest positions since the start of the war,” as it depends less and less on partners.
Ukrainian military officials and Western experts agree that the Ukrainian military is now stronger than ever before, as with greater European support and increased self-reliance it is closing gaps caused by the lack of US aid.
Mass production of drones on a scale and pace that would have been hard to imagine a year ago was especially important. This allows Ukraine to conduct long-range drone warfare and maintain a short-range “kill zone” along the front line.
This largely compensated for Ukraine’s personnel shortage and slowed Russia’s offensive, which many expected to be much more active last year and this spring, the publication notes.
It notes that the new phase of the war is very different from the beginning of the year, when Moscow had the initiative on the battlefield, and Russia’s winter air campaign destroyed most of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
