Overnight stay refused
A visit to the Republican Vilnius University Hospital (RVUL) left a gloomy impression on 15min reader Diana K. (surname known to the editorial office). According to the woman, not because of the treatment she needed, but because of an unexpected fee.

Diana says she was scheduled for a planned operation at the hospital in Lazdynai. But only upon arrival did she find out that she might have to pay an additional 10 euros.
“I guess that is the price for the night.
I am disabled myself, I came for a nose operation. When the nurse told me I would have to pay, I said I would go home after the operation,” the patient did not hide her frustration.
Hospital: this is not for medical services
According to representatives of the Republican Vilnius University Hospital, such a fee does indeed exist, but its application is not directly related to treatment.
“Nose operations at the Republican Vilnius University Hospital are performed as day surgery services. This means that after the operation, patients are discharged home the same day, and hospitalization in the hospital is not planned.

Patients who, after a day surgery operation, wish to stay overnight in the hospital at their own request are given the option to use a paid overnight stay service. The price is 10 Eur with meals or 5 Eur without meals.
We emphasize that this fee is not applied for medical services or hospitalization. It is an additional overnight stay service provided at the patient’s choice, which patients may use but are not obliged to,” explained RVUL representative Asta Bagdonavičienė.
According to her, patients undergoing planned operations not classified as day surgery, requiring a hospital stay of several days or longer after the operation, are not subject to this fee.
