“Of the 11 Indian citizens on board, 10 were rescued, and one Indian citizen is reported missing,” said a statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
Search and rescue operations were launched after the commercial vessel “GFS Galaxy” was attacked off the coast of Oman early Sunday morning, the ministry said.
The US Central Command reported that the ship was damaged and unable to sail due to fire and engine room damage, and accused Tehran of attacking the vessel.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) office reported that the crew abandoned the ship and were in a lifeboat, adding that the incident occurred about 17 km east of Oman.
The attack occurred after Tehran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday and launched missiles and drones at its neighbors in the Persian Gulf, retaliating for new US strikes.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that attacks on commercial shipping in this region are a cause for great concern.
“Attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in this region must end, and free and unhindered navigation (…) through international waterways in this region, in accordance with international law, must be restored as soon as possible,” the ministry said.
The new tension threatened a temporary agreement aimed at ending the war in the Middle East, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, during which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was also killed.
