According to the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Raimundas Vaikšnoras, during this week’s meeting in Berlin with the German Army General Carsten Breuer, it was decided that such a decision will ensure the safe return of rescuers to Lithuania and will become another example of close military cooperation between the countries.
“I am confident that our cooperation will continue to expand in all operational domains – on land, in the air, at sea, in the information and cyber space. The more we train and plan together during peacetime, the stronger our joint deterrence and readiness to defend NATO become,” said R. Vaikšnoras.
As BNS reported, at the end of June, earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Venezuela one after another, killing over 4,000 people, injuring tens of thousands, and rescuers are still searching for thousands missing.
In turn, the Lithuanian Government sent two teams to assist – medical and rescue teams.
Lithuanians, together with forces from other countries, conducted search operations in destroyed settlements in Venezuela and provided urgent medical assistance.
The Lithuanian mobile emergency medical team set up a mobile field hospital.
According to the military, air defense strengthening issues were also discussed during the visit. The commanders of the countries’ armed forces discussed opportunities to develop joint passive airspace surveillance projects, strengthen airspace control activities, and expand soldier training. It was noted that these initiatives contribute to increasing the interoperability of the Lithuanian and German armed forces and strengthening NATO’s eastern flank defense.
The generals also discussed the progress of the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania, long-term bilateral military cooperation prospects after 2027, and opportunities to jointly participate in international operations in the future, including the maritime security mission in the Strait of Hormuz.
