Martha, who lived in Oklahoma, died at the end of June at the age of 78. The official cause of death was identified as post-polio syndrome and chronic respiratory failure, but her sister is convinced that her condition was ultimately worsened by the long-term effects of COVID-19.

Iron lungs are a negative pressure ventilator. A motor-driven mechanism sucks air out of the cylinder, creating a vacuum around the person’s body, causing the lungs to expand and air to enter them. When air returns to the cylinder, the process reverses – the lungs contract and the person exhales.
