As noted by internet technology expert, head of one of the first internet providers in Lithuania, “Etanetas,” Arturas Stefanovičius, many still associate AI only with tools like “ChatGPT” or “Gemini.” However, according to him, AI’s role on the internet today is much more significant.
“Until quite recently, most online actions were performed by people – they searched for information, communicated, shopped, or watched videos. Today, an increasing share of these tasks is performed by AI tools. They analyze information, generate responses, and search for data. So far, most of them help humans complete specific tasks faster, but technology is rapidly evolving. Now the internet is becoming a space where not only people but also artificial intelligence actively operate,” says A. Stefanovičius.
By 2028, as predicted by the global technology research company “Gartner,” up to 33% of business software will use artificial intelligence (AI) agents capable of independently performing tasks online. Experts say that this will change not only internet infrastructure but also home internet needs in the coming years, and a stable and reliable connection will become even more important than today.
AI is also changing home internet needs
Artificial intelligence is gradually coming to devices used at home. More and more of their functions are performed in the cloud, constantly sending and receiving data, and some already use AI.
“Today, home internet is used by far more than just one computer or phone. At the same time, one family member may be watching a high-definition video, another participating in a remote meeting, and surveillance cameras and other smart devices are also connected to the network. Therefore, when choosing internet, people should consider not only the advertised speed. Connection stability, low latency, and wireless network quality at home are becoming increasingly important. In other words, it is important not only what speed the internet provider promises but also how the connection performs under real conditions when the whole family and many different devices use it simultaneously,” says the head of “Etanetas.”
The next step – AI agents acting on your behalf
According to A. Stefanovičius, in the coming years, more AI agents capable of independently performing tasks online will appear.
“AI agents will be able to search for information, plan trips, book hotels, compare product prices, or make purchases on behalf of the user. The difference is that they will not only provide answers, as AI tools often do today, but will also be able to act themselves. For example, when planning a trip, an AI agent will be able not only to find the most suitable flight or hotel but also to book it.
A person will perform fewer actions online themselves, but more will be done on their behalf. Therefore, a reliable internet connection will become infrastructure not only for what we do online ourselves but also for what AI does for us,” says the internet technology expert.
