2.5 times more rainfall than usual: where is the worst situation in Lithuania?

„The worst situation due to heavy rainfall this month has occurred in the Upyna, Tryškiai, Užventis, Šaukėnai, Kuršėnai rural, and Raudėnai elderships. Here, >2.5 times more precipitation fell than usual in August,“ writes G.Valaika on his Facebook page “Weather and Climate in Lithuania”.

Meteo.lt reports that in August, an average of about 89 mm of precipitation fell in Lithuania, which is 116% of the August monthly norm. In some places, more than one and a half months’ worth of precipitation has already been reached. The difference between the wettest and driest parts of the country is up to 5 times.

From August 1–26 (until 9 a.m.), the most precipitation was measured in Western Lithuania:

Mažeikiai – 179.1 mm (227% of the August monthly norm);

Šilutė – 146.8 mm (165% of the monthly norm);

Laukuva (Šilalė district) – 144.4 mm (160%);

Rietavas – 137.4 mm (149%);

Kelmė – 127.5 mm (182%);

Plungė – 126.6 mm (141%);

The least precipitation was measured in:

Kybartai (Vilkaviškis district) – 32.6 mm (49% of the August monthly norm);

Ukmergė – 42.7 mm (53% of the monthly norm);

Jonava – 46.9 mm (58%);

Marijampolė – 48.3 mm (66%);

Anykščiai – 48.5 mm (60%);

Kalvarija – 50.2 mm (69%).

Based on current data, today it will only rain in some places, and on Thursday and Friday dry weather will prevail. Over the weekend – there will be brief rain in many districts. The total amount of precipitation will be small, reaching 2–7 mm. This is especially good news for regions that have experienced very heavy rain.

Emergency situation in Telšiai district

On Tuesday, the mayor of Telšiai district municipality, Tomas Katkus, convened a meeting of the Emergency Situations Operations Center.

Considering the damage caused by intense precipitation and strong winds on August 23–24 – washed-out roads, flooded farmers’ fields, and other consequences – a decision was made to declare an emergency situation in Telšiai district.
