One of the most special ancient treasure collections in the world has been stolen.
On the morning of August 27 at 5:16 a.m., an alarm went off at a sports center in Villena, Spain, drawing attention to this location.

Just a few minutes later, the alarm also went off at the Villena Museum (MUVI), located about 2 kilometers away.
When the police arrived a few minutes later, the thieves were already gone – they had taken with them the majority of the priceless Villena treasure – a collection of Bronze Age artifacts, mostly made of shining gold.
Investigators believe the theft was carried out by three masked individuals who used several cars and staged a well-coordinated attack. According to the Spanish news agency EFE, it is not ruled out that the sports center alarm may have been used as a diversion to distract attention from the museum.
However, among the few items left behind was one of the most valuable in the entire collection. At first glance, it does not look special – just a rusty old bracelet.
But it was forged from material that came from the stars – meteoritic iron. It is one of two such items in the Villena treasure and one of the oldest known iron artifacts in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Villena treasure was discovered in 1963 when archaeologist José María Soler unearthed 66 artifacts about 3,000 years old, including bowls, bottles, bracelets, and other jewelry made of gold, silver, iron, and amber.
In total, the treasure consisted of an astonishing nearly 10 kilograms of gold.
However, two items in the treasure raised questions. One bracelet, similar to a necklace, and a hollow hemisphere decorated with gold were engraved with pits, rusty, and at first glance completely unimpressive.
At the time the treasure was made, iron smelting was not yet widespread in the Iberian Peninsula. So where could this metal have come from?
The answer only became clear in 2023 when a team led by Salvador Rovira-Llorens, former head of the conservation department at the National Archaeological Museum of Spain, found compelling evidence that these two items were of extraterrestrial origin.

These were the first items ever identified in the Iberian Peninsula made from meteoritic iron. Now only the bracelet remains.
The hollow hemisphere, likely taken for its shining gold decoration, became the thieves’ loot, while the more modest-looking bracelet was left untouched.
What the thieves left behind is cause for concern. Along with the iron bracelet, three silver vessels remained, as well as most of the ceremonial staff’s decoration and a few small gold items. It seems that one of the treasure’s crowns was lost at the crime scene.
Ignacio Montero, a scientific professor at the CSIC Institute of History and one of the researchers studying meteoritic iron, believes this allows for a grim conclusion.
“This confirms that the thieves’ only interest was the economic value of the gold and that the theft was not related to the historical value of the cultural heritage. If the main motive is limited to the economic value of gold, the threat of irreversible destruction becomes obvious. This would mean an irreparable loss, making it impossible to conduct any research in the future,” he told ScienceAlert.
Archaeologists are now concerned not only about whether the missing treasure can be recovered but also whether it will remain undamaged until it is found.
Such loot would be extremely difficult to sell openly. The Villena treasure is recognized as a cultural asset in Spain, and its unique items are well documented and easily recognizable.
However, if the thief was primarily interested in the gold value itself, the items could be dismantled or melted down. This would destroy priceless artifacts that have remained intact for millennia, reducing their value to the simple price of gold.
