Persons who have previously used “Smart-ID” will additionally be able to create a new account biometrically or with a “Smart-ID” account operating on another device.

The “Smart-ID” registration procedure is changing: the identity card, which is read by a card reader, will no longer be usable either when creating a new account for the first time or when registering again. For residents creating an account for the first time, two most commonly chosen methods remain – registration with “Mobile-ID” or at a bank branch.

New accounts created using an identity card with a card reader made up only a small portion of all registrations, so this change should not cause additional inconvenience for most residents,” says Evaldas Stonkus, Business Manager in Lithuania at the company “SK ID Solutions” that developed the solution.

Those who have the mobile signature tool “Mobile-ID” and want to create a “Smart-ID” account will be able to complete the registration process remotely. You just need to download the “Smart-ID” app, start registration there, choose identity verification with “Mobile-ID” and then follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

Persons who do not use “Mobile-ID” can create a “Smart-ID” account for the first time at a bank branch. When going to the bank, it is necessary to have a valid identity document and a smartphone.

How previous users will re-register

Residents who have previously used “Smart-ID” will also no longer be able to use an identity card with a card reader when re-registering. However, they will still be able to verify their identity by the aforementioned methods, as well as additional ones: biometrically or with a “Smart-ID” account operating on another device belonging to the same person.

It may be necessary to recreate an account after its validity expires, after changing or losing a phone, restoring its factory settings, or reinstalling the app.

“When registering biometrically, identity is verified using a passport or an identity card with an electronic chip. The document data is read by a phone supporting NFC functionality, and the user’s identity is confirmed by performing biometric facial recognition. Therefore, neither a card reader nor a visit to a bank branch is required,” explains E. Stonkus.

A new account can also be verified with your “Smart-ID” account operating on another device. This method can be chosen by all adults whose previous account was registered at a bank branch, is still active, and the user has access to the device on which it operates.

The “SK ID Solutions” representative reminds that to use all “Smart-ID” functions, it is recommended to check whether the smartphone meets the app’s technical requirements. Android users should have Android 10 or a newer operating system version installed on their phone, and iPhone users – iOS 15 or newer. For smooth account registration, it is also recommended to use a smart device supporting NFC functionality.

“Smart-ID” is an identity verification app that residents use to access e-services, sign documents, confirm electronic payments, and perform other actions online. Today, more than 1.8 million residents in Lithuania use “Smart-ID.” About 35 million transactions are performed with this tool per month.
