One of the most challenging stages has begun at the National Stadium: the character of the structure is starting to emerge

According to the engineers of the stadium’s general contractor “Naresta,” this construction phase determines a large part of the future stadium’s functionality, operational characteristics, and ability to meet international sports infrastructure standards.

“Unlike many typical public or commercial buildings, stadiums have to cover very large spaces without using internal columns. The main goal is to ensure that tens of thousands of spectators have a completely unobstructed view of the field. Therefore, support columns that would limit visibility cannot be used in the stands and roof structures. Such solutions are made possible by steel,” says Tadas Grincevičius, head of “Naresta,” one of the largest construction companies in Lithuania.

Steel also allows reducing the overall weight of the stadium structures, optimizing the loads on the foundations and other supporting structures, ensuring the necessary stiffness and resistance to wind and snow loads.

The installation of prefabricated reinforced concrete structures in the stadium is nearing completion. Meanwhile, the installation of steel structures requires even greater precision, the expert says.

“The stadium consists of thousands of interconnected elements, so every part of the structure must be exactly in its place. Detailed digital models are used before installation, and constant control measurements are carried out at the construction site to ensure that the entire structure is assembled precisely according to the project,” says T. Grincevičius.

The stadium exterior is taking shape

According to the head of “Naresta,” this phase is important for city residents following the construction progress because the steel structures begin to form the main spatial structure of the stadium.

“Until now, most of the work took place underground, related to foundations, reinforced concrete structures, and engineering networks. The installation of steel structures means that the stadium’s silhouette, roof, and main spaces are starting to take shape. They will become the skeleton of the entire stadium. The roof, facades, lighting systems, screens, sound, and broadcasting equipment will be installed on them. In other words, the stadium’s ability to function as a modern space meeting international requirements, suitable for football, concerts, and events depends on them,” says T. Grincevičius.

The stadium’s basement will house rooms for the museum, players, and media areas. Spectator zones and commercial spaces for catering establishments are planned on the first and second floors, and auxiliary and administrative rooms on the third floor.

All stadium construction work is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.

The contract with the general contractor for the first phase, “Naresta,” includes the construction of the stadium with a sports museum, two football training fields, and the installation of main engineering networks. Their value amounts to 70 million euros (excluding VAT).
