Airplane mode on phones was introduced to disable mobile connection and other wireless functions with one button press. Although today modern airplanes often allow passengers to use Wi-Fi and other wireless services, the feature on smartphones remains relevant beyond flights.

“The phone constantly maintains connection with the mobile network and, moving from one place to another, searches for the most suitable base station. Sometimes, especially after changing location or when the network load is higher, the device may not connect optimally immediately. In such cases, turning airplane mode on and off forces the phone to re-establish connection with the network, so the problem can sometimes be resolved within seconds,” says J. Puodžius.
When many people gather in one place
Users usually encounter higher network load at events, concerts, festivals, sports competitions, or other places where many people gather at the same time. In such situations, the mobile network has to serve significantly more devices and data traffic than usual.
“At concerts, festivals, or other large events, many more people use the connection simultaneously in one place, so the network faces a heavier load. If the phone briefly lost optimal network connection, turning airplane mode on and off can help refresh the connection,” says J. Puodžius.
Can help charge the phone faster
Airplane mode can also be useful when you want to recharge your phone battery as quickly as possible. By disabling mobile connection and other active wireless functions, the phone consumes less energy.
“When the phone is not searching for a network, not sending or receiving data, its energy demand decreases. Therefore, more of the charger’s supplied energy can be allocated to the battery. Although the difference is usually not large, in some cases the device may charge a bit faster,” says the Telia expert.
This is especially relevant in places where the mobile signal is weaker. In such situations, the phone may search more intensively for the network, causing the battery to drain faster.

Unexpected uses of airplane mode
According to J. Puodžius, airplane mode can also be useful in other, less obvious situations.
During work or rest. Turning on airplane mode can help avoid calls, text messages, and other disturbances.
Saving battery. During trips, hikes, or long events when there is no possibility to charge the phone, airplane mode can extend the device’s operating time.
Abroad. Upon arriving in another country, airplane mode allows temporarily disabling mobile connection and avoiding accidental data usage in roaming. Wi-Fi can be enabled separately if needed.
Resolving connection issues. If mobile internet is not working, messages cannot be sent, or the phone lost connection, quickly turning airplane mode on and off can help re-establish connection with the network without restarting the entire phone.
“Many users remember airplane mode only at the airport, but in fact, it is one of the simplest ways to quickly refresh connection, save battery, or temporarily disconnect from calls and messages. Of course, it will not solve all connection-related issues, but in some cases, it can help the phone reconnect to the network faster,” says J. Puodžius.
