However, a new study by scientists from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Duke University, and Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Chicago revealed what can happen when this process is disrupted by long-term alcohol exposure.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications, showed that in severe alcohol-related liver disease, cells may begin the regeneration process but fail to complete it. They remain in a state between mature, normally functioning liver cells and proliferating, immature cells.
