On Tuesday afternoon, officers of the Gintaras Žagūnas border guard post of the VSAT Varėna border unit stopped a VW Golf car for inspection on the Dieveniškės–Šalčininkai road, near the village of Širviai (Šalčininkai district). It was driven by a 30-year-old resident of the Šalčininkai district.

That place is near the exit of the so-called Dieveniškės loop, surrounded on all sides by Belarusian territory. Here, border guards check all persons and vehicles passing through.
Suspecting that the car might be carrying illegal cargo, VSAT officers brought the VW Golf for a detailed inspection to the Gintaras Žagūnas border guard post. It was there that it was revealed that the car had hidden compartments for smuggling contraband.
Belarusian cigarettes were stuffed into hiding places arranged in various parts of the car’s interior and trunk. In total, VSAT officers found 1,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian tax stamps. Their value, including all mandatory taxes payable in Lithuania, is 5,510 euros.
An administrative offense procedure has been initiated against the driver for transporting excise goods in violation of the established rules. The penalty for this offense ranges from 5,200 to 6,000 euros and includes confiscation of the vehicle.
The resident of the Šalčininkai district was summoned to appear at the Gintaras Žagūnas border guard post in two weeks, where her administrative offense case will be examined.
The seized cigarettes and the VW Golf car are temporarily stored at this border guard post.
