The 28-year-old player, playing unseeded in New York for the first time, was down a set and a break, but showed strong character and defeated one of the tournament favorites.
“I have no words. This is simply a wonderful start to the tournament. Thank you very much for being behind me and supporting me strongly throughout the match,” the winner addressed the spectators.
For the Greek tennis player, this is the most significant victory in Grand Slam tournaments in the past five years. Interestingly, in their head-to-head matches, he had lost all five encounters to the Frenchman so far, including a 0:6, 1:6 defeat in Miami this year.

However, recently S. Tsitsipas has shown signs of recovery – he won an ATP 250 tournament in Switzerland and now made a noisy start in New York, where Lloyd Harris (ATP-139) will await him in the second round.
Meanwhile, A. Fils came to the US Open as a newly crowned Masters champion – he triumphed in Cincinnati but did not live up to the favorite status in New York.
“I have no answers. The energy just disappeared at the end of the second set and I never got it back. I will have to talk to my team, but losing energy at this level is simply unprofessional,” the 22-year-old criticized himself.
