Germany’s Olympic ambitions: “These would be the biggest Games of all time”

Germany is making plans to host the Olympic Games.

Although the Germans have decided to pursue the biggest sporting event, they still have to decide where it could take place.

One of the most realistic options is the Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr region – a densely populated area of Germany, considered the country’s economic engine due to the large concentration of industry, logistics, finance, and scientific capacity.

“With Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr, it would be the largest Olympic Games of all time. 17.6 million tickets – that would be about 3.5 million more than at any previous Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Hendrik Wüst, head of the North Rhine-Westphalia region. “This is a world record.

And that means: more people in the stadium, more families in the stands. Without any new stadium.”

The Germans, planning to hold the games not in one city but in a region, intend to use already built sports facilities, adapt some, or build temporary structures.

For example, the football finals would take place in Dortmund in a 70,000-seat stadium.

Basketball, volleyball, and handball matches would likely be in Düsseldorf.

The Olympic athlete village would be in Cologne – from there the main arenas can be reached on average within 34 minutes or less.

The Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr bid is now supported by 16 cities, and it is estimated that 66% of local residents view the effort to host the Olympic Games favorably.
