Last weekend, as a record-breaking storm ravaged Lithuania, hundreds of dramatic images of the damage caused by the elements circulated in the media and social networks. One of the most memorable photos was a massive tree crushing a “Hyundai” car with Czech registration plates, as if it were a toy car.

The tourists who got into this accident near Kėdainiai, traveling from the Czech Republic to Latvia, feel miraculously alive, and remember the minutes in the crushed car interior as the most nightmarish of their lives.
The nightmare continued when the injured driver was found to be in violation of traffic rules for the accident involving the tree and was fined.
Why did the Lithuanian police treat foreigners this way, who were in a state of shock after a tree fell directly on our car and we miraculously survived?
The foreigners, fined for “unsafe speed,” are bewildered by such an assessment of the situation, because, first and foremost, they firmly believe the tree fell on their stationary car.
The “failure to assess meteorological conditions” attributed in the violation report is also perplexing, as the vehicle stopped on the forest-surrounded road precisely because it could not move smoothly and safely during the storm, with strong winds toppling trees and carrying everything around in the air.
As reported, the storm that raged in Kėdainiai district on Saturday almost ended in an even more tragic accident. In the town of Akademija, a tree fell “on a moving car,” and two people were injured in the incident.
According to the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat, the accident occurred in the late afternoon, around 5:15 PM, on Parko Street in Akademija town.

As the “Hyundai” car, driven by a 29-year-old man, was driving down the street, a tree fell on its roof.
The impact and overall effect due to the large mass were extremely strong – the heavy tree severely damaged the vehicle, simply crushing it.
The victims showed the 15min editorial office a document confirming that after this incident, the “Hyundai” is not only unfit for use but has also been scrapped for disposal.
The family also shared photos of how the driver was injured: paramedics took him to the hospital with a neck brace.
„I gave testimony and personally told the police what happened. I clearly stated that we were stationary, not driving, but, as I understand, completely different circumstances were indicated in the report, and ultimately we were found guilty.
