The Lithuanian Prison Service announced on Monday that the Criminal Intelligence Department initiated a pre-trial investigation into the distribution of narcotic and psychotropic substances – fentanyl – in Vilnius County last October.

It is suspected that a resident of Vilnius city, previously convicted multiple times and having served a prison sentence, acquired drugs in the Vilnius district and later distributed them in parts to persons associated with correctional institutions.
During the pre-trial investigation, the case expanded – it currently involves 16 suspects.
During searches in Šalčininkai, along with narcotic substances, 9,400 contraband cigarettes were found and seized. This material will be handed over to the police for further investigation.

Five persons were arrested during the investigation. They have been charged with drug distribution.
