The 41-year-old veteran from Switzerland is playing his final career season on the ATP tour, and exactly 10 years ago here in New York he won his third Grand Slam trophy, but he did not receive the organizers’ favor.
“Unless S. Wawrinka for some reason did not want a wild card, this is simply shameful. He is not on the list of qualifiers, so Wimbledon became the last Grand Slam tournament in Stan’s career. The last wild card for the men’s singles went to Patrick Kypson, and earlier spots were secured by Gael Monfils, JJ Wolf, Michael Zheng, Dane Sweeny, Jack Kennedy, Darwin Blanch, and Sebastian Gorzny.
In the women’s competition, Sofia Kenin was awarded at the last moment, before her – Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, Taylah Preston, Leolia Jeanjean, Carol Young Suh Lee, Thea Frodin, Reese Brantmeier.
