Although you have to pay 2500 euros for such a number, there is no shortage of people wanting to stand out. Data from “Regitra” shows that the popularity of personalized license plates has increased more than eightfold over the past two decades.

An inscription that tells about a person
Usually, a customer registering a vehicle receives a license plate assigned in order. However, those who want to stand out can choose exclusive combinations of letters and numbers or order a personalized license plate.
A personalized number can consist of 1–6 characters, but at least one of them must be a number. Therefore, creativity is not lacking here: you can choose a name, initials, an important date, a word, its abbreviation, or a combination of letters and numbers with personal meaning.
However, not every idea can appear on a car. Personalized license plates are evaluated by a commission, and the chosen combination cannot coincide with swear words, vulgar words, or slang, nor can it promote aggression, military actions, cause confusion or fear, mislead, or offend other road users.
In other words, a driver can create their own number, but their choice is limited by clear rules.
Twice as many orders
Jolanta Laurinavičienė, Head of Commercial Services Development at “Regitra,” says that personalized license plates are becoming increasingly popular in Lithuania – currently, twice as many are ordered as six years ago.
According to her, what people want to see on their cars is also changing.
“Currently, we notice that words with positive, beautiful meanings in Lithuanian and English are becoming popular, such as love, happiness, family, success, or number combinations that bring luck, for example, 777. Such a license plate makes other road users smile and draws attention. I also always notice them when driving myself. I believe other road users do not overlook them either. Through the license plate, one simultaneously manifests wishing themselves success and a good journey,” says J. Laurinavičienė.

However, despite new trends, one choice remains unbeatable – names.
“Still, names have remained at the top of popularity for many years. Especially female Lithuanian names. Often such a license plate is ordered as a gift for a partner, and couples can order or receive as a gift from relatives a personalized license plate with their newly created family surname. Such a gift is meaningful and truly memorable,” says J. Laurinavičienė.
So, not only the driver’s name can appear on the car. The license plate sometimes becomes part of the family story – reminding of a loved one, a child, an important life date, or even a new beginning of a family.
2500 euros for your own sign
The price of a personalized number is 2500 euros. This is not a necessity paid for practical benefits. Such a choice is more related to exclusivity, emotion, and the desire to have something that belongs only to a specific person.
It can be said that the driver pays not for an additional car function but for the opportunity to write a part of their story on it.
For one, it may be a name. For another, children’s initials. For a third, the company name. For yet another, a number combination with personal or symbolic meaning.
And this sign is not inseparable from one car. When changing the vehicle, the personalized license plate can be transferred to another car registered in the same owner’s name.
Therefore, it can travel with the person – even when the car changes.
When the number becomes a talisman
Why does a person decide to pay 2500 euros for a few characters?
Psychologist Genovaitė Petronienė believes that a personalized number often becomes a way to tell others about oneself.
“A personalized car number often becomes a kind of business card. It is no longer enough for a person just to have a car; they want to tell something about themselves through it. It is a message to others: this is who I am, what is important to me, and how I want to be seen,” says the psychologist.

According to her, for some people, such a choice may also be related to the desire to emphasize their status.
“If a person chooses a powerful, expensive car and complements it with a personal number, sometimes it can be a way to strengthen their image. It is as if saying: ‘I am valuable, successful, special.’ For some people, it is very important to receive attention and recognition from others.”
However, the psychologist emphasizes that not every personalized number should be seen as an attempt to show off.

“Sometimes it is simply a form of creativity, a game, or a hobby. But there are hardly any random inscriptions. Every chosen word, name, or symbol reflects the person in one way or another. After all, the desire to be noticed, to stand out, and to leave a message about oneself is very human.”
When you want to invite luck
Recently, according to the “Regitra” representative, not only names but also words and number combinations with positive meanings are becoming popular.
Love, happiness, family, success, 777 – these are like small wishes traveling with the driver.
According to the psychologist, such choices can become a kind of talisman.
“People like symbols. When a word or a hint of luck becomes a car number, it is a kind of manifestation. The person believes that this will attract the desired things or at least constantly remind themselves of them. It is a kind of self-programming mechanism.”
Perhaps that is why some drivers choose not just numbers that look nice but those to which they give special meaning. The car number becomes something the person sees every time they sit behind the wheel.
Like a short message to oneself: good luck, safe travels, don’t forget what you strive for.
When the car becomes part of the business
Personalized license plates interest not only private drivers. Companies also choose them to make their cars more recognizable.
In such cases, the number can become part of the company name, brand, or its abbreviation. The car becomes not only a means of transport but also an additional advertising channel.
However, according to G. Petronienė, a personal relationship can also be seen here.
“When a company name appears on a car, we often see a strong identification with one’s activity. Such a person seems to say: my business is me. Of course, it is also advertising, but at the same time, it shows how much personal identity they associate with their work.”
This is especially interesting because a car is often more than just a means of transport. It can become part of a person’s image – from the chosen model and color to interior details and, finally, the number.
When a few symbols become a personal message
Today, a personalized license plate can mean very different things.
For one, it is the name of a loved one. For another, the family surname. For a third, the business to which many years of life are dedicated. For yet another, numbers that, in their opinion, bring luck.
And although from the outside it may seem like the simplest combination of letters and numbers, for its owner it often has a completely different weight.
The psychologist notes that the desire to stand out and be noticed is nothing unusual in itself.
“Sometimes it is simply a form of creativity, a game, or a hobby. But there are hardly any random inscriptions. Every chosen word, name, or symbol reflects the person in one way or another.”
Perhaps that is why the personalized number has become more than a luxury detail.
For 2500 euros, a person does not buy a faster or better car. They buy the opportunity to have their own sign.
And that sign can be very simple – a name, surname, family, love, or three sevens.
Cars change. One model replaces another, but a number given personal meaning can travel with the person.
Perhaps that is why a personalized number today increasingly becomes not a luxury for luxury’s sake but a small, personal message on the road – one that everyone sees, but the true recipient of its meaning is one.
